Are you a gardening glamourpuss?

Here’s a garden gift ideas article from Elspeth Thompson in the Daily Telegraph’s gardening section that made us smile.

It points out that sartorial standards have slipped, and that we’re not looking as stylish out there against our perfectly-manicured lawns and pristine flowerbeds as once we did. Apparently, to make up the deficit, we are busy splashing out on high-end accessories like “luxurious leather aprons, linen smocks and sleeveless gilets”.

This doesn’t remind us at all (or indeed the author) of the heavy work of double digging, turning over the compost heap, getting potatoes out of the ground or grubbing up a long-established shrub that’s just not earning its keep any more.

But perhaps we’re doing it all wrong. Perhaps we should just sit back on our stylish hardwood garden lounger with a tall Pimms – and get a man in.

Garden gift ideas for glam gals

…Take, for instance, Nancy Lancaster, society hostess and interior designer, wielding a hose while wearing a neat fitted blue jacket with horn buttons and what is undoubtedly a cashmere scarf.

Cecily “Parsley” Mure is captured watering the alpines in her London garden in a black tulle blouse and high heels, while my personal favourite, Rhoda, Lady Birley, indulges in a spot of pruning at Charleston Manor in a pair of beige Capri pants, two cardigans, a silk scarf and a battered conical straw hat perched daringly on one side of her head. (It goes without saying that the three women – all of them well-respected, hands-on gardeners – are wearing full makeup).

Though their clothes are obviously old, they are beautifully cut, and worn with style. Compare and contrast with my habitual gardening get-up of ancient, baggy cords, moth-eaten jersey and old black baseball cap. I rest my case. Read full article here…
